PDM Analysis Ltd. at the 14th International Conference on Compressors and Their Systems

From September 8th to 10th PDM Analysis Ltd. was at the 14th International Conference on Compressors and Their Systems, hosted by the Centre for Compressor Technology at City St George’s, University of London. This three-day hybrid event brought together leading voices from academia, research institutions, and industry, including compressor manufacturers, end users, and system integrators, for an immersive exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and innovation.

As proud Silver Sponsors, PDM Analysis Ltd. was excited to support and actively contribute to this global platform for advancing compressor technology

Day 1: A Powerful Start

The conference opened with a surge of energy as in-person and online participants from around the world joined. The first day set the tone with a compelling keynote addresses that set the stage for the week.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robin Langebach, from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, gave his keynote speech titled “An example-orientated discussion about somewhat unusual research projects in the field of compressors and refrigeration technology”. Professor Langebach’s keynote offered a project-based exploration of new sensors, high-pressure liquid injection, and the application of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in teaching and research.

Alongside the keynote address, there were also technical presentations and podium papers showcasing the latest developments in air, gas, refrigeration compressors, expanders, and vacuum pumps. This included the first panel discussion on “Digital Evolution in Compressor Systems“.

The day also offered many opportunities for networking and collaboration, bringing academia and industry closer together. For PDM Analysis Ltd., the highlight of the first day was seeing the global community converge on a shared mission: advancing the science and engineering of compressor technology.

Day 2: Deep Dives into Innovation

The second day continued with a strong focus on emerging technologies and practical applications. The keynote address of the day was presented by Marco Pietropaoli, the CEO & Co-Founder of ToffeeX who discussed “A New Physics-Based Design Framework for High-Performance Fluid Components: Applications in Compressors, Turbomachinery, and Thermal Systems”.

Pietropaoli introduced ToffeeX’s pioneering generative design platform, which leverages advanced simulation and topology optimisation to rapidly develop manufacturable, high-performance fluid and thermal systems. His keynote demonstrated how such tools can reshape compressor, turbine, and thermal management component design, bridging innovation with practical manufacturability.

After the keynote, attendees engaged in technical sessions exploring new methods and trends in compressor system design and performance as well as case studies and insights on bringing theory into practice.

The day also included a Workshop hosted by Gamma Technologies on “Accelerating Innovation: The Strategic Role of Modelling and Simulation Across the Product Lifecycle“.

Day 3: Closing with Impact

The final day wrapped up three days of intense learning and collaboration. It featured a keynote address by Dave Pearson, the Group Sustainable Development Director at Star Refrigeration Ltd, who spoke on the topic of  “Possible future opportunities in compressor and system design relating to industrial heating – a customer perspective”.  Drawing on decades of experience, Pearson explored how compressor and system design can unlock opportunities in sustainable industrial heating. His perspective as both engineer and customer illuminated the practical challenges and transformative potential of heat pump technology and industrial heating solutions in achieving sustainability goals.

Again, the audience was able to attend cutting-edge technical sessions on compressors, expanders, and related systems. industry-focused talks addressing real-world challenges and solutions as well as closing discussions that reflected on the week’s achievements and set the stage for future collaboration. The final panel session was also held on the third day, titled “How are new technologies reshaping engineering studies”.

The atmosphere was both reflective and forward-looking. Conversations weren’t just about current breakthroughs—they were about building long-term partnerships, accelerating innovation, and ensuring compressor technology continues to evolve for global industries.
